Bio-Oil

I personally love facial oils and serums. Ever since I stepped into the world of beauty blogging, I have been seeing all the top beauty bloggers swear by one product- Bio-oil. I had heard so many good things about this miracle skin potion that when I got a chance to review it, I was very excited to try it out myself.

Product Description:

According to the company “Bio-Oil is a specialist skincare product formulated to help improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and uneven skin tone. Its unique formulation, which contains the breakthrough ingredient PurCellin Oil, is also highly effective for aging and dehydrated skin. PurCellin Oil reduces the thickness of the Bio-Oil formulation and makes it easily absorbed.”

Bio-Oil can also be used for massaging the body, treating patchy skin, fading away pigmentation, protecting cuticles of fingernails, and so on.

Product Claims:

When applied regularly, over time there is a noticeable difference and scars will begin to fade. Your stretch marks will become less apparent as Bio-Oil works on making the blemishes blend into the natural skin tone so they become less apparent. Bio-Oil’s breakthrough ingredient, PurCellin Oil, allows for the ointment to absorb into the skin immediately without leaving a greasy, oily feeling.

Bio-Oil is clinically tested to diminish the signs of scarring, and has proven itself in multiple cases that it works. It’s a skincare product which has kept the same formula since 2002, by no means adding any additional ingredients or removing any of its’ fundamental vitamins and minerals.

Bio-Oil is a world-renowned skin relief adored by the stars, such as Kim Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra, and Victora Beckham, swear by it. They use Bio-Oil religiously, so that’s just a little more of a reason to use it.

Key Ingredients of Bio Oil (and What They Do)

Vitamin A helps exfoliate or accelerate the skin’s renewal process, which can improve its texture and tone. It also promotes the formation of new collagen, helping to increase elasticity. Vitamin A is less aggressive and less likely to cause irritation than its more potent form, which is known as retinol.

Vitamin E is a moisturizer and an antioxidant, which helps protect the skin from free radicals that can cause skin damage and premature aging.

Calendula Oil moisturizes and regenerates skin cells. It helps heal dry, sensitive skin and reduces inflammation caused by skin injury, scarring, or sunburn.

Lavender Oil is believed to destroy bacteria in the skin as well as calm and soothe irritated skin.

Rosemary Oil has antiseptic and antimicrobial effects that reduce bacteria and viruses, decrease inflammation and promote healing of wounds.

Chamomile Oil is especially useful for sensitive skin because it’s soothing, calming, healing and anti-inflammatory. It may help even out discoloration.

Packaging:

The actual bottle of Bio-Oil is placed inside a white carton and accompanied by an instruction manual (it even has diagrams demonstrating the application of the product). The bottle is not at all fanciful, but I really love its neat and sleek design. It is made of transparent plastic (you can always see how much is left inside) and the opening is covered by a huge white-colored screw-cap. Even though it is a small bottle, it is quite sturdy and completely leakage-proof. All these make it a good travel-friendly option.

Application:

It is recommended to apply twice daily for a minimum of 3 months. During pregnancy, apply twice daily from the start of the second trimester.

How to Use Bio Oil on Acne Scars

The makers of Bio Oil recommend that you apply the product twice daily for a minimum of 3 months. A few drops of Bio-Oil should be applied directly to the acne scar or discolored skin and massaged in a circular motion until fully absorbed.

How Effective is Bio Oil for Acne Scars?

Bio Oil works the same on all types of acne scars and other indented scars, whether they are pockmarks, ice pick scars, rolling scars, or boxcar scars. The product’s basic premise is that moisture is the best treatment for acne scars, so Bio Oil functions as an emollient, aiming to reduce the appearance of acne scars by keeping them hydrated. Although Bio Oil claims that it’s non-pore-clogging and quickly absorbed by your skin, keep in mind that it is still an oil-based product. So, if you believe your acne is caused by or worsened by, products that contain oil, be sure to consult your dermatologist before using Bio Oil for acne scars.

How I use it

As far as I’m concerned, I have been applying it religiously since the past three weeks. Since I have a sensitive, combination and acne-prone skin, so I apply only a drop on my cheeks and my forehead for acne scars and redness. I also apply it on my dark circles. I even apply it on the scar on my hand which I got by accidentally pouring boiling water on the back of my hand. Other than that, I apply it on my aching muscles to relieve pain.

Instead of a bubble bath at the end of the day, I sometimes like to pour a little BIO-OIL into the tub to give the body the nourishing care it deserves.

In order to rehydrate and cleanse my pores, I’ve been using BIO-OIL for a quick home facial, by simply adding a few drops into warm water, I soak a facecloth in it and then leave it on my face for approximately five minutes. That has been very beneficial for hydrating my skin.

This versatile product is also a great alternative for a make-up primer, apply a drop of the oil to the face and leave it to dry before applying foundation, this will aid in smoothing out uneven skin tones.

Moreover, BIO-OIL can be used as an eye make-up remover, dab a few drops on a cotton ball and the oil will wipe away the make-up whilst conditioning the eyelashes.

I have also been mixing Bio-Oil with sugar to scrub my lips and it works wonders. I also like to apply this oil on my cracked heels and leave it overnight by wearing socks. The next morning my feet feel very soft and moisturized.

 My Verdict:

I usually use more expensive & organic products for my face, but this oil is great as a serum under moisturizer & in general. The most unusual thing I noticed about Bio-Oil is that it has a pinkish-orange tone, which turns completely transparent as soon as it comes outside the bottle. There is a very mild fragrance, which reminds me of herbal beauty products. The oil is very light in weight and its texture is absolutely non-greasy. No matter how dry your skin is, only a few drops will be enough to moisturize it efficiently. Moreover, it goes deep into the skin after a little massage (the manual shows how you need to move your fingertips gently in small circles) without leaving any oily residue. So, if your skin is oily to some extent, you can still use this one without looking like an ‘oil refinery’.

Apart from hydrating the skin, Bio-Oil can improve its elasticity greatly. It is a staple in my beauty stash since last month and I see myself using it for the next few months until my scars lighten. It has also started fading away my pimple marks and blemishes, thereby giving me an almost even skin tone. One needs to be more disciplined to see some serious results. So you should use it patiently and religiously, twice a day, for minimum 3 months to notice a real difference. So I definitely see myself buying another bottle after this one finishes. I highly recommend this to everyone suffering from stretch marks, acne scars, pigmentation and dark circles. The results might vary from person to person but there’s no harm in trying.
